We all know the story of the three wise men and how upon the birth of Christ they pulled out a karaoke machine and started singing. Ok, maybe the biblical story was slightly different but Christmas Karaoke is becoming increasingly popular with each passing year. Karaoke has made a long, somewhat unexpected journey, from bars and clubs to the living rooms of average people everywhere. One reason for this is how easy it to set up a home karaoke system. There are simple systems that work right out of the box, and even the higher-end models require a minimum of setup beyond easy plug and play. So it’s no wonder why karaoke is being incorporated into so many of our yearly events and traditions.
Christmas Karaoke – a new family favourite
Nothing says Christmas like karaoke. Ok maybe Santa Clause and wintertime says Christmas more than karaoke. Along with Jesus, eggnog, snow, presents, Christmas trees, candy canes, ginger bread men, turkey dinner, decorations, elves, and cranberry sauce – those things say Christmas more than karaoke too. But if you go down the list, let’s say two hundred items down the list, karaoke will eventually show up. And the interesting thing is; the incorporation of karaoke into Christmas is on the rise as it is the modern incarnation of carolling.
If you’re tired of your old Christmas routine of engorging yourself on food then sitting around while your uncle tells you stories you’ve hear a hundred times before, then you can consider doing some Christmas karaoke this year. The first thing you’ll need is a karaoke system if you don’t have one already. If you’re only going to use your machine once in a while then there is no need to go overboard with a karaoke system purchase. You’ll want one that is relatively cheap, easy to set up, and that comes with the capability to plug in two or more microphones. After all, Christmas karaoke is hardly any fun if you are singing by yourself. Make sure to buy a machine that has a video output that you can plug into your televisions so that everyone can participate.
Most karaoke machines come with a CD or two that you can play, but this is Christmas karaoke we’re talking about so you might have to invest in some real Christmas songs. The whole thing should be fun and exciting so picking good songs is very important. Keep this in mind because most people don’t realize that a lot of Christmas songs are a real drag and not that upbeat to begin with. Think about it, there are some pretty melancholy Christmas songs out (in tone and melody) and you don’t want to put everyone to sleep by singing “Silent Night” all evening. So here’s a list of up-tempo fun Christmas karaoke songs to be on the lookout for:
Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer
Santa Claus is coming to Town
Jingle Bells
Jingle Bell Rock
Frosty the Snowman
Feliz Navidad
All I want for Christmas is you
Sleigh Ride
A Holly Jolly Christmas
Grandma got run over by a Reindeer
Winter Wonderland
Deck the Halls
Let it Snow
Holly Jolly Christmas
Those are some good songs to start you out and they should be easy enough to find. Once again, don’t get caught with a CD full of songs like The First Noel and White Christmas or you may find yourself falling asleep by the fireplace, or worse yet – crying yourself to sleep. One fun Christmas karaoke game is to sing along to a popular song but make up your own lyrics. All karaoke CDs have the capability to play with audio only so take advantage of that and create new versions of your holiday favourites. With time, Christmas karaoke can become a yearly event that even your grumpiest of relatives looks forward to! And don’t forget a karaoke machine can make the perfect Christmas Gift!
