It’s been a long time since Jewel made her singing debut, and she hasn’t really been in the news as of late. I suppose she’s been making music all this time, it would be a shame if she wasn’t. If you’ve been wondering where she went, Jewel has made a brief comeback appearance on the Funny or Die Website. She recently went under disguise and visited an LA karaoke bar to surprise some of her fans. If you want to skip all the details then just scroll to the bottom and watch it for yourself. Otherwise, read on to get an opinionated preview of the whole thing (with major spoilers).
The whole concept comes off as a bit weird at first. You can’t help but wonder why Jewel would want to do this. And why pick Jewel in the first place? Like previously stated she’s basically disappeared from the popular music scene. But then you here her sing and then you become a fan all over again. Remember when she really hit it big and how many of her songs came out on the radio? You really forget how many hits she had until you watch her relive them through karaoke. And even the most passing of Jewel fans has to admit she used have some great songs, and she does an awesome job with all of them in this video. I wasn’t really a hug fan way back when, but I’d like nothing more than to have her put out a quality album now.
The video starts off explaining the premise of the shoot, which is that she is going to go under disguise and sing her own songs at a karaoke bar. Again it begs the question why on earth is this even happening, but let’s just forget about that. So they start off by putting on a big fake nose, making Jewel a brunette, and giving her a pair of glasses. Maybe it’s because I knew it was Jewel underneath it all, but she still looked pretty hot to me. And then they plump her up a little by giving her a fake curvy bum, which seemed unnecessary, but didn’t hurt one bit.
So then the crew go to a karaoke bar and proceed to sit down unnoticed. She’s with a bunch of actors who are playing her friends. They all take turns singing to throw off any suspicion and then they ask their friend “Amanda” (who is really Jewel) to come up and sing. Halfway through the performance is when it gets good because Jewel proceeds to put some riffs on her own song that go far and beyond what the original version was. She basically rocks her own song on the karoke machine and the crow goes wild. It’s weird because you expect her to sing well, but she sounds REALLY good, especially when she’s hitting the high notes or adding some special twists to her songs.
Then after a while, Amanda goes away and like magic Jewel appears as herself to sing more songs. There must been quite lag between Amanda and Jewel because some people didn’t even make the connection that they were the same person. It’s funny to watch the reaction when they find out, but you also wonder how they didn’t know. I mean there’s this girl who sings like Jewel – like EXACTLY like Jewel – and then twenty minutes later JEWEL shows up to sing some more. It’s not like this was some place that Jewel would show up to have some fun. I guess this is how Superman gets away with being Clark Kent – it can actually happen in real life.
My favourite part of the video is when one woman basically implies that Amanda is ugly. She says something to the effect that it doesn’t matter how ugly you are if you have a good voice. And she says it right to Jewel (in Amanda makeup) It would have been perfect if she had ripped off her nose right there and shoved it in her face. But I guess Jewel wouldn’t do that.
