Karaoke Etiquette for Brand New Rookies

The casual observer may see a karaoke bar as simply a place where people go to sing in front of strangers. But all it takes is a few visits to see that there are other things at play. There is not as much random chaos as it may first appear. In fact, any established karaoke bar will have its own set of rules and regulations. Some of these rules will be posted for everyone to see. And some of them will be unwritten. While you don’t necessarily have to follow the unwritten rules, they may sometimes be more important than the general rules meant for the public. If you want to work your way up that karaoke ladder and get noticed, you should always pay attention to what others are doing.

It is always important to be polite and respectful in any singing environment including the stage and karaoke machine – even if it appears other people are not. You never know where someone else stands in the karaoke community when you first enter the scene, so it’s best to stay on your best behaviour. If you come in with an arrogant or cocky attitude before you’ve even sung a song, then you’re asking for trouble. Sometimes the way you carry yourself will be even more important than your actual singing ability. And if you happen to be able to sing, then behaving accordingly will double your chances of winning over the regulars and staff at the bar.
Don’t laugh at others. It may be hard sometimes, especially if someone seems to be a really bad singer, but resist the temptation to laugh at other people. And make sure never to point out someone and ridicule them specifically. This just shows a lack of class and demonstrates that you are a karaoke rookie. Real karaoke veterans know that laughing at others is a big no-no. You have to consider that getting up on stage takes guts and without people willing to try, then there would be no karaoke in the first place.
While others are singing, it’s always nice to pay attention. Sure you’re there for a good time and you want to laugh and drink with your friends, but you also have to respect the show. The whole system breaks down if people only choose to listen when their friends are singing. So show a good level of respect while others are singing because you will surely appreciate it when they return the favour.

Every karaoke room will have certain singers who dominate the room. They are considered to be the veterans and they usually have the talent to back up their status. It’s important to be friendly with these people and absolutely essential not to make them mad at you. They can have a heavy impact on your success in a karaoke room. That doesn’t mean you have to be a slave who listens to what they say, but treat them as you would your elders. These are the people who can teach you the most about karaoke. And if you’re lucky, you may get one to put you under his or her wing and show you the ropes.
