Karaoke Games
Karaoke can be great on its own, but there a variety of things you can do to change or adapt the activity to maximize your karaoke experience. These games are designed for people with karaoke machines who can play them in the privacy of their own homes. So all you will need is a good karaoke machine, a bit of ingenuity, and a group of fun karaoke friends who share in your passion for singing.
Karaoke sing along – It’s one thing to stand up in front of your friend while they watch you sing. It’s an entirely different experience to have them sing along with you in a group sing along. There is something indescribable about singing in a group when everyone knows the words (thanks to your new machine) and can fully participate. So instead of being a solo performer, you can serve as more of a conductor as you lead your friends in song. To break it up a bit you can divide your friends into smaller groups and have them sing along at different points. Then when you want the full chorus affect, give the signal and have the whole room sing. Every person can take turns and have a chance to pick a song that they like.
Fill in the blanks – Have your friends promise that they won’t look at the screen so they don’t know the words for sure. Then as you sing the song, you can pick intervals where you stop singing and it is up to your friends to fill in the blanks. This is a great game because either way it is a lot of fun. It sounds great when your friends are able to complete the lines of famous songs. And if your friends don’t know the words exactly it will still be a great laugh as they stumble their way through the lyrics. The lead singer can have a great time trying to trip up their friends and mistakes can be quickly corrected since you will have the lyrics readily available at your disposal.
Sing your own words – the great thing about karaoke tracks is that they can give accurate re-creations of your favourite songs but without the words. This means you have full creative licence to sing your own lyrics. Imagine the fun you can have when you can make up lyrics to your favourite songs. You will be able to say what you’ve always wanted in the song. There is no limit to your own creativity and encourage your friends to participate in coming up with original version of well-known songs.
Celebrity impressions – don’t just sing the songs of your favourite artists; try to sound like them too. You can come up with a dream line-up of celebrity singers to put on your won star studded contest. Let’s see if your friends can actually sound like their favourite stars or if the impressions fall short. Either way it will be a lot of fun to re-create a famous voice whether or not you can actually pull it off. Consider putting together a CD and listening to it together afterwards. Sound quality will be important for this one so you might want to get a higher-end product rather than a cheaper karaoke machine that won’t allow the sound to come through.
Karaoke Revolution – Karaoke Revolution is a game that doesn’t even require a karaoke machine of your own. It doesn’t even require you to sing! This is a game that can be found for every major video gaming console that has you trying to hits the right notes instead of the right lyrics. It’s a great group game and while not exactly like karaoke, it offers a variation that is both entertaining and potentially hilarious.
Karaoke rap – the great thing about karaoke is that you’ll always have the lyrics handy, but you can also go off course with your own variations. One interesting twist is to have everyone do a short rap in the middle of every song that they sing. It might be challenging to come up with words on the spot so you can tell people beforehand to have this prepared. There’s nothing funnier than watching somebody sing a traditional song and then interjecting with a hilarious rap. Don’t worry about losing your place because the lyrics will always be there for you to catch up.
The hat game – start by having a list of master songs that you will be using for the night. Then write the name of each song on a piece of paper and put them all into a hat. Then a person picks a piece of paper and they are required to sing whichever song they get. This is a great way to add some variety so that people aren’t always choosing the same songs. Just make sure that you have each song handy so that you can get going as quickly as possible. You might also want to find a karaoke system with iPod compatibility so that you can use downloaded songs for quicker access.
Karaoke drinking game – just remember to use alcohol wisely whenever you combine it with karaoke. Please drink responsibly and that’s always the best way to have fun. Having said that, there’s nothing wrong with having a few drinks while you enjoy singing karaoke at the same time. You can expand on the drinking game concept by adapting it to karaoke. All you have to do is pick a song and determine what the key word is. And then every time that word comes up while singing people have to take a drink of their chosen beverage. You can also eliminate alcohol completely and just use soft drinks or juice.
Karaoke music videos – this one takes a little bit of planning but if you can pull it off you will have a great music video that you can share with your friends. Instead of having a simple karaoke night, you can plan a whole production where you film and actual music video in your own style with the help of your karaoke system. You can pick several people to take turns being the lead singer or you can designate set rules for the entire shoot. The sky is really the limit with how creative you want to make your video, and you can even have choreography and background singers. And when everything is all said and done, you can upload your video on the Internet for other people to see.
Karaoke relay – this is a great game that lets everybody in the room participate. Just have everyone line-up in a row so that they know the order in which to sing. Then every once in awhile people will pass off the karaoke microphone to the next person in line. Each person will take turns singing a few words and then relaying the microphone to the next person. You can even organize two teams so that you will have different combinations of duets going at the same time.
Name that tune – this is an offshoot of the game that you have already probably seen on television. It starts off with one person who takes hold of the karaoke microphone for around one. From there the person can sing without music so that the rest of the group can guess the song. You can add an element of challenge by humming the tune at first so that the group only has your voice to go by. And then once everybody gets the song right, you can turn on the karaoke machine and launch into an official rendition of your chosen tune.
