Karaoke Singing Tips for Beginners

The first time you sing in front of other people is never easy, but it doesn’t have to be horrible either. In fact, some people have much more fun than they expected and find themselves hooked from the start. If you are looking to sing at a public karaoke room for the first time, then here are some helpful hints to get you through the experience.

When you go to sing karaoke, you should never go in “cold”. So that means try to do as much research about the room as possible. If you can, go with some friend to sit through a night without even singing. Have a few drinks, sit back and relax, and see how things operate. This will better prepare you for what to expect when you finally decide to get up there. You can even approach the karaoke DJ to ask him for helpful hints.

If you’ve made up your mind that you want to try karaoke, then start by picking the song you want to sing. You want this song to be something familiar to you, but somewhat unique at the same time. Remember that karaoke regulars have heard all of the old standards a thousand times over. So they will really appreciate it if they get to hear something new, especially if you manage to pull off a decent version. You might also want to pick something upbeat and light hearted to raise the mood of the room. But whatever you finally decide on, just make sure it a song you really like and that you know. Spend some time to memorize the lyrics just in case, even though you’ll have the lyrics scrolling for you anyways. It’s always better to be prepared because some people can actually get lost while staring the screen so it’s easier to find your place if you already know the song.

When the big day comes, get some friends together and head to the karaoke room. You might want to go early to make sure that they have your song available and to put in your name on the list. Remember not to have too many drinks no matter how nervous you might be. There’s nothing worse than getting drunk when trying to sing well. And when your name is finally called, be prepared for the rush of adrenaline that ill some with it. You’ll probably be feeling nervous up to that point, but remember that the anticipation is the worst part. All you have to do is get to the stage and thing should be ok. For most people, once the music starts the nerves go away as they start to sing.

When you get on stage the first thing you might notice is the spotlight. Don’t be scared or distracted by how bright it might be. Take some time to orient yourself and find the karaoke machine. Get a grip on the microphone and hold it at a comfortable distance from your face. Remember that you only need to raise your voice level slightly and the mic will do the rest. You don’t need to shout, and make sure you aren’t whispering either. It’s also important to listen when you sign. So listen for your own voice, the music, and the reaction of the crowd. You’ll notice it really takes a balance of all your senses to pull off karaoke singing successfully. If things are going badly, then take a moment to check back with the lyrics on the screen, or give your friends a look for support.

Above all else, have fun and enjoy yourself. This isn’t an audition or a competition. Karaoke singing is meant for amateurs to share their love of music so there is no pressure to outperform anyone. You don’t need to have a great voice, you just need a positive attitude and a general respect for the room. When it comes to karaoke singing tips, the best thing you can do is build up experience as you become more comfortable on stage with the karaoke system. As long as you don’t give up you’ll be learning from your mistakes and improving with each performance.
