Christmas Karaoke

We all know the story of the three wise men and how upon the birth of Christ they pulled out a karaoke machine and started singing. Ok, maybe the biblical story was slightly different but Christmas Karaoke is becoming increasingly popular with each passing year. Karaoke has made a long, somewhat unexpected journey, from bars and clubs to the living rooms of average people everywhere. One reason for this is how easy it to set up a home karaoke system. There are simple systems that work right out of the box, and even the higher-end models require a minimum of setup beyond easy plug and play. So it’s no wonder why karaoke is being incorporated into so many of our yearly events and traditions.

Christmas Karaoke – a new family favourite

Nothing says Christmas like karaoke. Ok maybe Santa Clause and wintertime says Christmas more than karaoke. Along with Jesus, eggnog, snow, presents, Christmas trees, candy canes, ginger bread men, turkey dinner, decorations, elves, and cranberry sauce – those things say Christmas more than karaoke too. But if you go down the list, let’s say two hundred items down the list, karaoke will eventually show up. And the interesting thing is; the incorporation of karaoke into Christmas is on the rise as it is the modern incarnation of carolling. Read more »

Jewel Visits a Karaoke Bar

It’s been a long time since Jewel made her singing debut, and she hasn’t really been in the news as of late. I suppose she’s been making music all this time, it would be a shame if she wasn’t. If you’ve been wondering where she went, Jewel has made a brief comeback appearance on the Funny or Die Website. She recently went under disguise and visited an LA karaoke bar to surprise some of her fans. If you want to skip all the details then just scroll to the bottom and watch it for yourself. Otherwise, read on to get an opinionated preview of the whole thing (with major spoilers).

The whole concept comes off as a bit weird at first. You can’t help but wonder why Jewel would want to do this. And why pick Jewel in the first place? Like previously stated she’s basically disappeared from the popular music scene. But then you here her sing and then you become a fan all over again. Remember when she really hit it big and how many of her songs came out on the radio? You really forget how many hits she had until you watch her relive them through karaoke. And even the most passing of Jewel fans has to admit she used have some great songs, and she does an awesome job with all of them in this video. I wasn’t really a hug fan way back when, but I’d like nothing more than to have her put out a quality album now. Read more »

I used to Work in a Karaoke Bar

I used to work in a karaoke bar. I know that’s not a sentence that most people get to say. It’s not really a sentence that many people WANT to say either, but I think of it as unique. I can say for certain that working in a karaoke bar was a special job that was filled with interesting experiences. Some of these experiences were bad, others were horrible, but all of them were memorable. To this day I’m glad that I worked at this karaoke bar as it got me through college and it’s where I met my first girlfriend. I also came to hate many songs as they were ruined by people with not signing ability, but we’ll get back to that later.

The karaoke bar I worked at was more of a restaurant than a bar. They served a full menu and the music and singing didn’t start until 9pm in the evening. There was a dance floor in the middle of the restaurant, and the main stage was right in front of it. It was a pretty elaborate setup as the elevated stage was highlighted by spotlights, and the singers were accentuated with lights and lasers. They would even throw on the smoke machine for special occasions, especially during Christmas which was always a bit odd. The karaoke machine that powered the whole show was state of the art, and there were big screen TVs that showed the lyrics to everyone in the audience. As soon as people entered the restaurant they were given food menus along with a song book from which they selected which songs they wanted to sing. Each song had a corresponding number which the customers wrote down on a piece of paper which was then handed over to the waiters, who would then give them to the karaoke DJ. Needless to say if you were rude then there was a good chance your request sheet would get lost on its way up to the DJ. Read more »

Karaoke Singing Tips for Beginners

The first time you sing in front of other people is never easy, but it doesn’t have to be horrible either. In fact, some people have much more fun than they expected and find themselves hooked from the start. If you are looking to sing at a public karaoke room for the first time, then here are some helpful hints to get you through the experience.

When you go to sing karaoke, you should never go in “cold”. So that means try to do as much research about the room as possible. If you can, go with some friend to sit through a night without even singing. Have a few drinks, sit back and relax, and see how things operate. This will better prepare you for what to expect when you finally decide to get up there. You can even approach the karaoke DJ to ask him for helpful hints. Read more »
