Thanks to YouTube we have some of the most popular singers of all time who have made inroads into popular culture without having to be on the scene for years first. Sometimes they seem to come out of the blue and hit it big with record deals, and then they go on to create their own music that outsells even more established stars. There are many traditionalists who would claim that this is bad for music in general because it effectively bypasses the long-standing hierarchy that determines ultimate quality. In other words, some people feel it’s too easy to become a music star these days, and even Hannah Montana herself has made this claim. Recently Miley Cyrus made the proclamation that “It should be harder to be an artist. You shouldn’t just be able to put a song on YouTube and go on tour.” Do you agree with her?
