It was a great year for music – unless you actually like good music – but at the very least there were a lot of interesting celebrity stories. Even though there are very few artists who produce listenable material anymore, there are enough weirdos and bizarre characters to keep the industry going. We saw the downfall of some pretty big stars and the emergence of a whole new generation that should theoretically keep the music industry going. But crowds are more fickle than ever so it’s important for some of these artists to get their 15 minutes while they can. We might take a shot at some of your favourite singing stars in this article but trust us, by this time next year you will be ashamed of yourself for liking some of them. Here are the top music-related stories of the past year.
Taylor Swift’s Hair at AMA’s
Wow, was this really Taylor Swift? She’s always had a vacant look about her with her curly locks complimenting her doll-like eyes. She has certainly always been pretty but she kind of looked like a-not-so-smart kid in a grownup’s world. Remember what her face looked like when Kanye interrupted her last year? But then she shows up at the AMA’s and she’s got this long straight hair that makes your look like a supermodel. It was a complete transformation and a welcome one at that. She’s still probably about as intelligent as a bag of marbles, but we can’t deny she looks a lot classier and mature with her long hair. By the way, if you are offended that we are taking a swipe at Taylor Swift we would like to ask if you have actually listened to one of her live performances. Simply Horrible. Nicki Minaj and Keri Hilson
We would like to give credit to two artists who seem to get by on their talent with minimal fuss. OK, so maybe that applies more to miss Hilson who has a classy way of going about things using her beautiful voice. Nicki Minaj has turned into a clown show of late and she gets a lot of attention for her huge asset. But we are going to give both of these ladies credit for making a name for themselves when there are clearly stars who are a lot bigger right now. Hopefully they stick around because we really enjoy some of their music.
Bon Jovi’s Top Selling Tour
What is this, 1985? Believe it or not, Bon Jovi was the top selling tour in act of this year. How do you put on a show with only four hits? Well, we guess it’s possible because a lot of people paid money to see this 80’s hair band recreate the magic.
Can Your tell me How to get to Katy Perry’s Boobs
Katy’s Perry’s Boobs showed us on Sesame Street, got Elmo all excited and then were banned from the airwaves. Didn’t someone at some point notice something was going on during the filming of that segment? Wasn’t there at least one stage hand who was like “wait a minute, this might not be appropriate for children… Maybe we shouldn’t film a full 5 minutes of this”. In one sense we think Sesame Street overacted a bit by pulling the video completely, but then again this show is 5 year old children. We also grew up on Sesame Street and love it to death so if they want to ban Katy’s Perry’s Boobs then they ban Katy’s Perry’s Boobs.
Ke$ha looks like hot garbage
Ke$ha looks like hot garbage. She looks like a fairy-godmother waved a wand over a trash pile. Imagine what she smells like. It must be like a bean-bag chair with coffee and cigarette stains. That’s all we have to say about that.
Eminem’s resurrection
It was good to see Slim Shady back on the charts again because he is simply too talented to be sidelined by addiction. We actually didn’t know he was so heavily hooked on painkillers, but apparently he was in a pretty big hole prior to this year’s resurrection. The music scene needs this guy to keep it going so we hope he is able to stay clean.
John Mayer and Sexual Napalm
Unlike Eminem, the music scene probably doesn’t really need John Mayer. As far as we know, he has no male fans and after his comments about his past girlfriends he shouldn’t have any female ones either. He strikes us as a bit of an odd bird who is able to get away with way too much. And let’s not forget his weird face that he makes whenever he plays the guitar. It looks like he’s smelling Ke$ha.
Boring MTV Video Awards
What happened to this award show? Every year we can expect at least one amazing performance or something exciting to happen. This year it was so boring that we had to watch it twice to make sure we didn’t miss something. They had Kanye West and Taylor Swift on the same show but singing two separate songs. Come on people, that’s the perfect opportunity for a duet that will have people talking for months!
Justin Bieber
We are honestly concerned for young Justin Bieber because we have seen this phenomenon so many times before. Hopefully he has enough talent to carry him through this teenage phase and he becomes a legitimate artist later on down the line. We have seen many other pop acts in the same vein go on to self destruction and we wouldn’t wish that on anyone. At the same time, we would rather eat scorpions then listen to any of his songs, but still there is the extreme possibility that he might end up like one of the countless former pop stars that are now complete bums.
We are the World
Hey, member that horrible thing that happened in Haiti? Are you still giving money to them or at least thinking of them in your prayers? Don’t worry, the rest of the world has gotten over it too. One of the worst leftovers from the Haiti disaster (musically speaking) is the recreation of We are the World. Why was Jeff bridges there? It was so weird and sounded so bad that we were worried it would actually somehow cause Haiti to lose money. And at least most popular songs have a shelf life of a few months. If you watch the video of the new We are the World today, we guarantee that you will squirm at how awkward and embarrassing it is.
The Year of Gaga
The Gaga magic has died down a bit towards the end of the year, but it is clear but the majority of 2010 belonged to Lady Gaga. We’re going to give credit where credit is due, she produces music that is extremely listenable. Even if it’s not in any kind of genre that you like, it’s hard not to listen to a Lady Gaga tune and at least tap your feet. She came out with hit after hit and that’s all it takes to take over the music scene. Sure she got attention for her outfits and flamboyant behaviour, but none of that would’ve mattered if she didn’t produce quality songs. We’ll see if she can keep it up in 2011, and we sincerely hope she does. She certainly has her work cut out for her because it will be hard to top what she did this year. http://www.ladygaga.com/
